what is fascinating about Olivier Kugler work is how finished his work looks compared to that of other reportage artists. The use of repetition of information, and colour especially in his reportage of a certain character called Alberto here are some pictures showing
As you can see in the right bottom corner you can see the hey macarena this features throughout the visual essay. This gives the viewer a sense of time.... a sense of what background noises there are.
Likes to do reportage illustrations... loves to draw people he meets and places he visits. Prefers to draw on location or from own reference photos. Likes to color his drawings on his laptop.
Influenced by French/Belgian bande desinées and Otto Dix.
as you can see there is clearly an influence from otto Dix on the work of Olivier Kugler, as you can see from the facial expressions that otto has picked up on you can see the same expression that Kugler has captured on the face of alberto.
Moving on from Olivier Kugler to another reportage artist that is Gabriel Campanario
what I am intrigued by his style of work is the use of perspective he gives the viewer and the type of emotion he felt whilst looking at the buildings. As you can see here the drawing across two pages with the ring binder gives the viewer the sensation of what the building did to Gabriel, a large looming building with many floors and a massive amount of information and detail to put down.
The drawing is warped to give the viewer an idea of the scale of the building, and an understanding of where the artist was stood in relation to the building.
here is another example of position.
Here is a list of Artists that experiment with the media they have at their disposal
Alan young is the first, artist I find interesting. What is attractive about his style of work is the use of thick black line work.
Joe Sacco
Looking through the works of Joe Sacco, his style of reportage is very similar to a comic books style. When looking at his work I am reminded of the propaganda illustrationer David Lowe and his work on propaganda posters during World War II. Sacco has a more detailed finished article than Lowe, but there are similar characteristics evident.
(not sure if Lowe was an influence on the works of Joe Sacco though, will have to find out who Sacco was influenced by)
Building reportage artists;
Matteo Pericoli
the reason why Matteo is in my list of Artist considerations because of his work of "london Unfurled" which is a continuous drawing of the North Bank and South Bank of the river Thames, unfortunately the addition of the waves i feel makes it seem childish, however the rest of the drawing is fantastic, the detail put into each building is phenomenal.
Here is just a snippet of the type of work he produces there is another book that he has had published called the City outside my window. The book is about how he has gone around New York city and has drawn what he could see out of his friends windows, his own window and sometimes strangers windows.
